Ed Miliband rejected warnings he is going “too far and too fast” and instead vowed to speed up the construction of renewables across the country. This will include a “massive” expansion of net zero infrastructure on the public estate, as well as allowing large electricity substations to be built without planning applications.

Labour blames Open AI’s cash struggles for data centre cancellation

A Labour minister has claimed OpenAI’s “challenging” financial situation is behind the decision to halt data centre investments in the UK, rejecting claims that high energy costs are to blame. This marks a split with OpenAI, which singled out the cost of energy when pulling the plug on an AI data centre in the North East last week.

Yorkshire gas field to mine bitcoin

A giant new natural gas field in Yorkshire is to be exploited for mining Bitcoin rather than boosting Britain’s energy supplies. The West Newton field near Hull is estimated to contain up to eight billion cubic metres of gas. Time to lift the ban and start boosting Britain’s energy security.

Mobile network operators have warned they could be forced to ration phone signal access to combat soaring energy prices triggered by the war in Iran. In a stark warning to the Government, telecoms giants including VodafoneThree, Virgin Media O2 and EE said they were drawing up emergency contingency plans after being excluded from Rachel Reeves’s energy support scheme.

South Korea to introduce driving restrictions and energy rationing

The world’s 12th-largest economy has emerged as the frontline of the global energy crisis with its oil reserves at risk of running dry. Among developed countries, South Korea is almost uniquely lacking in natural resources including coal, oil and gas, relying on imports to meet 90pc of its energy needs. State employees have been banned from driving one weekday out of five in an effort to preserve petrol supplies.

Lufthansa to cancel 20,000 summer flights

German airline Lufthansa will cut 20,000 short-haul flights over the summer, saying soaring fuel prices have made many journeys "unprofitable" for the firm.

Vladimir Putin is attempting to squeeze Europe’s energy supplies further by closing a major oil pipeline into Germany.
