The truth about power bill increases

Net Zero Watch’s new analysis of Ofgem electricity price data revealed that gas is now having only a small effect on bills. Around three quarters of the increase over the last ten years is due to decarbonisation policy. The story was picked up by Guido Fawkes blog, and spread from there. Andrew discussed it on Talk. Centrica boss Chris O’Shea said that bills will not come down in future either. Greens responded by calling for green subsidies to be shifted off electricity bills and onto gas or tax.

Miliband Madness

The Secretary of State continued to issue mad directives, and prompted similar insanity in others:

  • He announced an expansion of the budget for the Clean Industry Bonus, a subsidy scheme applied on top of existing subsidy schemes.

  • He also extolled the jobs creation prospects of Aspen, a huge planned floating windfarm. At £10m per job created, he might have been better to keep quiet.

  • Highways bosses announced that they would remove 140 miles of motorway junction lighting in order to hit decarbonisation targets.

Conservative return to rationality continues

The Guardian was outraged when Conservative spokesman Andrew Bowie said – entirely correctly – that Net Zero targets were not based on science. Cult members are rarely happy when rationality speaks its mind.

Power cut highlights ageing grid

There were major power cuts across London Underground. Ageing grid infrastructure appears implicated, highlighting a growing concern that a focus on grid expansion for Net Zero purposes is leading to neglect of what we already have. Andrew was on GB News discussing the background.

Scots can stay in their cars

The Scottish Government jettisoned its target to cut car use by 20% by 2030, just the latest rashly imposed target to be dumped by the Holyrood adminstration.

International

GOP targets renewables

Eco-warriors were taken aback by the aggressiveness of Congressional Republicans’ plans to cancel renewables subsidy schemes.

Chinese kill solar?

Kill switches were found in Chinese made inverters, the electronic gizmos used to connect solar panels to the grid. The revelation confirmed suspicions that Chinese-made technology is a national security threat.

Another one bites the dust

Australia looks unlikely to hit its renewable energy target.

Etcetera…

After chairman Fiona Bruce ostentatiously "corrected” Richard Tice on an episode of Question Time, the BBC quietly edited the video, because she had got the details of carbon dioxide emissions completely wrong.

Reform UK’s Richard Tice said that Net Zero is destroying the economy. Ed Miliband called for a debate on Net Zero. A green venture capitalist warned that Messrs Farage and Tice were a real threat to Labour, because of their energy poliices. In The Critic, James Graham looked at what Reform-run councils can do to undermine the Net Zero agenda.

Tim Worstall laughed at a paper in Nature Climate Change. The authors were getting worked up about the rich having higher carbon emissions than the poor.

Kathryn Porter was on British Thought Leaders.

Much amusement was had at the expense of Ed Miliband when it emerged that his wife had joined a neighbourhood campaign against heat pumps, which are disturbing the peace in the leafier parts of north London. Heat pumps are a key part of the Secretary of State’s climate crusade.

Admit it: Net Zero is fantasy

The announcement that the Hornsea 4 offshore wind project has been put on ice strikes another blow at the credibility of the Net Zero project. In 2017, Whitehall told us that the cost of windfarms was

A new factsheet from Net Zero Watch shows claims that high electricity prices are due to the influence of gas prices on wholesale markets are almost entirely false.
