Renewable UK CEO urges Miliband to restart North Sea drilling

The UK’s wind farm trade body has called on Ed Miliband to “take energy out of the culture wars” by increasing North Sea production.

EDF: energy bills will be £300 higher for at least a year

Household energy bills will be up to £300 higher for at least the next year, Britain’s biggest power generator has suggested. EDF said it expected Ofgem’s annualised price cap to rise to more than £1,900 through this autumn and winter. Germany, France and the Netherlands’ gas storage facilities are at historic lows, meaning those nations will be desperate to refill through the summer and probably accept premium prices.

Helm: the UK faces a deep industrial electricity price crisis

Oxford University’s Dieter Helm has said that restoring industrial competitiveness requires structural reform of electricity pricing, not short-term fixes. He is calling for three shifts: charging industry based on long-run system costs rather than full network costs; moving away from gas-set prices to a capacity-based “equivalent firm power” model that accounts for intermittency; and indexing carbon prices inversely to oil and gas to stabilise costs. Alongside expanded gas storage and long-term North Sea supply, this would deliver predictable, competitive energy prices for both existing and future industries.

Rolls Royce scraps its 2030 electric target

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has abandoned its ambition to become a fully electric brand by 2030, marking a significant shift in strategy as the global transition to electric vehicles shows signs of slowing at the very top end of the automotive market.
