Net Zero Watch press release

23 August 2024

From the director

To our readers and all of our generous donors

It has been a good week for our campaign, with a great deal of media attention being garnered by our report on the BBC’s biased climate output.

And Mr Miliband has been very much on the defensive, with energy prices on the rise once again, and his policies being subject to widespread criticism from industry. Unfortunately, as we explain in our new film, published this week, climate catastrophism is a cult, and such rational concerns as costs and jobs are of little to concern to its adherents. We should therefore expect no change from the current administration.

But at least our message is getting out there now.

Wishing you all the very best weekend.

Andrew

UK

Miliband warned of job losses

Ed Miliband has been warned that plans to differentiate electricity pricing between regions of the UK will be a disaster for the industrial Midlands. Mr Miliband flew to Brazil for a 45 minute chat with his opposite number about “strengthening ties”.

Left-wing MP campaigning against Drax

Diane Abbott, the hard-left MP for Hackney, has launched a campaign against the Drax biomass plant, blaming it for high consumer energy prices.

Energy prices ever upwards

The UK’s energy price cap increased by 10%, on the back of higher gas prices, putting Ed Miliband on the defensive. Analysts Cornwall Insight forecast that there would be further rises in the winter. Commentators noted the double-whammy effect on pensioners, many of whom have already lost their winter fuel allowance. It was reported that one in four people are worried about switching the heating on.

City Airport given permission to expand

The Government outraged green activists when it gave London’s City Airport’s expansion plans the go-ahead.

Business warns Miliband over tax

Companies operating in the North Sea oil and gas industry supply chain wrote to Ed Miliband to express grave concern about his plans to increase taxes on the sector.

Centrica boss issues energy warning

Centrica boss Chris O’Shea has warned of continuing rises in electricity bills and a threat to energy security.

Around the world

Berlin cuts heat pump subsidies

German heat pump sales are already cratering, but facing fiscal difficulties, the country’s government has been forced to cut its budget for heat-pump subsidies by 16%.

Ford cancels plans for electric SUV

Having originally said it would delay the project, the big carmaker has now cancelled it entirely. It will lose $5 billion on EVs this year.

Denmark’s energy island delayed again

Plans to build an artificial island in the North Sea to speed up maintenance of offshore windfarms have been delayed for a second time. The costs are running into the tens of billions.

Etcetera

Adaptation: optimistic and pessimistic takes

Gordon Hughes considers the different views on climate adaptation - optimists who have looked at the details, and pessimists, whose underlying motivation sometimes seems to be a concern that adaptation is just too mundane.

Media coverage of our BBC report

Paul Homewood’s report for Net Zero Watch on BBC bias got lots of attention:

  • GB News covered it on their website

  • Swedish media channel Riks Europe interviewed Andrew

  • As did Julia Hartley-Brewer on Talk.

  • Andrew had an op-ed on the subject in Spiked!

A debate on Starmer’s green push

Andrew was on GBNews, debating whether Starmer’s green push would lead to higher energy prices.

The cult of climate catastrophism

We released a short film on why climate catastrophism is a cult, and why that should worry you. Watch it at Rumble or Youtube.

Congratulations to Craig Mackinlay

Craig Mackinlay, the driving force behind the Parliamentary Net Zero Scrutiny Group, was raised to the peerage, becoming Lord Mackinlay of Richborough.
