UK

Grid security furore continues

Arguments over last week’s near-miss blackout continue. David Rose set out the story in Unherd. Kathryn Porter explained the grid operator’s evasions on a pair of posts on her blog. (1, 2).

UK chemicals extinction

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Britain’s richest man, warned that Net Zero policies are destroying the UK’s chemical industry, once a key pillar of the economy.

NZW on the red team?

Shadow energy secretary Claire Coutinho called for government to set up a ‘red team’ to sense-check policy, with Net Zero Watch director Andrew Montford suggested as a key recruit.

No new grid applications

With a bonanza of subsidies available, dozens of companies are applying for new grid connections. Unable to deal with the backlog, the system operator closed the list to new applicants.

Boiler tax imposed

While MPs backs were turned, the government sneaked the so-called ‘boiler tax’ onto the statute books. Mr Miliband admitted that heat pumps may never be cheaper than boilers.

The no-plan Net Zero

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said that the Net Zero target had been imposed without any idea of how it would be delivered.

International

Fire at world’s largest battery

Moss Landing, the world’s largest battery, experienced a major fire, the second at the site. Local residents were again evacuated. NZW pointed out that the impacts in the more densely populated UK would be far worse.

Tear down those windfarms!

Germany’s AfD party threatened to close down all of the country’s windfarms. This has been inevitable for many years.

US plans ‘energy dominance’

Chris Wright, soon to be installed as US Energy Secretary, indicated that the new administration would be pursuing ‘energy dominance’ in the first days of Mr Trump’s administration.

Canada must exploit natural resources

Against a backdrop of the collapse of Mr Trudeau’s regime, Joe Oliver, a former finance minister, called for Canada to start to exploit its natural resources again.

Etcetera…

During her time in office Claire Coutinho commissioned a full system costing of the GB electricity system. Ed Miliband has cancelled it. Ignorance is bliss, when it comes to Net Zero, it seems.

Lord Frost was on the Julia Hartley-Brewer show talking about Net Zero for the developing world, an idea he described as immoral. Andrew was on Mike Graham’s show talking about job losses in the oil and gas sector.

It was revealed that the UK’s energy department has spent £4 million on advertising.

There was considerable concern on social media about the Climate and Nature Bill, a private member’s bill that will force the government to ignore competing concerns when forming green policies.

Net Zero Watch welcomes Kemi’s realism

Net Zero Watch welcomes the admission by Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch that the 2050 decarbonisation target was ‘a mistake’ and that it was put in place without any plan to deliver it.

What future for fusion in the UK?

An alternative to power generation by nuclear fission, which currently supplies 10% of the world’s electricity, is nuclear fusion, which uses the isotopes of hydrogen, tritium and deuterium, as fuel.

LA fires: is climate to blame?
