UK

Miliband mayhem

Labour’s energy plans are causing chaos. The push for EVs is proving disastrous, with Nissan warning thousands of jobs to be lost and Ford cutting hundreds more. The industry is threatening to abandon the UK entirely.

As if to proclaim his disdain, Mr Miliband then reintroduced the hated ‘boiler tax’.

Meanwhile, the energy price cap rose again, as did inflation. Undeterred, the chancellor told the City of London to focus on climate change.

Somewhat late to the party, a top windfarm executive announced that Labour’s plans are not rooted in reality, while Leo McKinstry said that Miliband resembles a cult leader.

A jolly in Baku

It emerged that Keir Starmer had taken a 470-strong delegation with him to the COP29 climate conference in Baku. Embarrassment doesn’t seem to be the PM’s strong point though. As if to emphasise this point, he announced a bonus subsidy scheme for windfarms, to be paid on top of their existing handouts. Clearly a billion pounds per month is not enough for the renewables industry. The conference looks set to end in the usual shambles.

Shadow boxing from Coutinho

Shadow energy secretary hit out at Ed Miliband’s Net Zero plans, but the Conservatives remain committed to decarbonisation. Reform are now close behind them in the polls.

International

Wright man for the job

Chris Wright, a good friend of NZW and GWPF, was nominated to become Donald Trump’s Energy Secretary. At TCW, Paul Homewood wondered if Wright might be able to kill off Net Zero entirely.

Oil giants retreat

Three major oil and gas companies are backing off from involvement in renewables.

Lights out in Germany?

The boss of German energy giant RWE said that the if the recent Dunkelflaute is repeated in January, the lights may go out. (Article in German, but see translate button at the end).

Lights out in Sweden?

Northvolt, Europe’s great hope for battery manufacturing, went bust. Its boss resigned.

In the media

Andrew Neil wondered if there was any limit to the pain that Ed Miliband was willing to inflict on the British people.

Paul Homewood’s latest review of the weather in the UK was distinctly unalarming, as always.

GWPF’s director Dr Benny Peiser, speaking the Netherlands, considered the end of Net Zero.

Harry Wilkinson was on Radio 5 live (!) talking about the COP.

Eminent hydrologist Demetris Koutsoyiannis, one of the most interesting scientists working on climate, has launched a Substack, called Climath.

Also on Substack, Gordon Hughes looked at the economics of solar power in the UK. The words ‘extraordinarily expensive’ appear.
