Labour’s Net Zero plans left in disarray after factory closure

Pressure is mounting on the Labour Government to revise its approach to Net Zero in light of a recent factory closure. The plant in Luton produces vans for Vauxhall-owner, Stellantis, but has become uneconomical thanks to mandatory targets for EVs.

EV craze is killing our car industry

Ross Clark takes aim at the car industry itself for its recent woes. He recalled how Stellantis Vice President and group managing director, Paul Willcox, had welcomed the ZEV mandate, saying:

“Stellantis is fully committed to achieving 100 per cent electric new car and van sales in the UK and Europe by 2030. This is true across all of our brands including Vauxhall, Peugeot, Fiat and Citroën, so we fully support the UK government’s ambitions.”

Vauxhall owner to close Luton factory, putting 1,100 jobs at risk

The plans to close the Vauxhall van factory in Luton puts 1100 jobs at risk, reports the BBC.

Britain gears up to relax EV sales rules

At the 11th hour, it appears that ministers are waking up to the threat facing the car industry, and are preparing to relax rules on the UK’s electric vehicle market.

International

High energy costs continue to plague Europe

The highest spot-based electricity prices in Europe since February 2023 threaten industrial production in key economies and loom large over business sentiment.

Oceans emit sulphur and cool the ocean more than previously thought

A fascinating new study, published in the journal Science Advances, examines the climate impact of sulphur released from marine life in the oceans, and finds it has a larger cooling impact than previously thought.

Germany joins backlash against drive for EVs

Germany has joined a growing backlash against fining car makers who miss net zero targets - suggesting the firms should be allowed to keep the money to invest in cutting emissions.

Were the House of Lords misled?

In a Twitter thread, GWPF Head of Policy, Harry Wilkinson, examines claims from a House of Lords Library briefing that renewables were cheaper than gas even when broader system impacts were taken into account.

  • Our Director, Andrew, spoke to Julia Hartley Brewer about the emerging crisis brought about by the ZEV mandate.

  • He was also on Times Radio talking about the same issue.

  • The GWPF’s Harry was in action on GB News, looking at whether Kier Starmer’s promise not to interfere in people’s lives could be trusted.
