Net Zero Watch press release

20 September 2024

From the director

To our readers and all of our generous donors

Marshall Foch, the French commander during World War I, famously said

“Hard pressed on my right. My center is yielding. Impossible to manoeuvre. Situation excellent. I am attacking.”

Ed Miliband’s situation is similar, although it’s fair to say that he is hard pressed and yielding both left, right and centre. The economic harms of twenty years of decarbonisation, alongside all the other problems that beset us, make it just as hard for him to manoeuvre.

At the moment, he is adopting a Fochian bravado, but even someone as fanatical as Mr Miliband can surely not construe the situation as ‘excellent’. And unlike the general, who received timely reinforcements and eventually won the day, Miliband stands alone, with all the absurdities of Net Zero dragging the country and his reputation further into the morass. His (and our) only option is headlong flight – he just doesn’t know it yet.

Wishing you all the very best weekend.

Andrew

UK

EV retreat

The Government announced that the deadline for ending sales of cars with combustion engines would be put back five years, to 2035. Too little, too late was the response. In related news, the Times reported (£) that for those who can’t charge them at home, EVs are twice as expensive to run as their petrol equivalents.

Log burner retreat

The Scottish Government paused its ban on installations of log burners in new homes.

Climate aid retreat too?

Foreign Secretary David Lammy signalled a possible retreat on pledges of “climate aid” for foreign countries.

Long-distance LNG

It was revealed that the UK is importing LNG from Peru, in preference to home production. The South American imports have to travel across the Andes, the Amazon basin and the Atlantic.

Smart meter shambles

Personal finance guru Martin Lewis wrote to Ed Miliband to suggest that installing smart meters that worked would be a step forward.

Green hydrogen plant yet to break ground

A £45 million green hydrogen plant in Scotland is yet to break ground, four years after it was announced.

Decarbonisation

EV demand collapses

Demand for electric cars appears to be in freefall in the EU, with German demand down 69% and French by 33%,

Meloni on the warpath

Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni attacked the EU’s ban on the sale of new fossil fuel-powered car engines after 2035. She correctly observed that the policy is ‘self-destructive’. The Commission has been resisting attempts to have the ban overturned.

BP wind exit

BP announced that it will divest its US onshore wind assets, which are “not aligned with its growth plans”.

EU electricity markets hit by negative prices

Overproduction by renewables is producing rapidly increasing incidence of negative market prices across the EU. The interaction of these prices with subsidy mechanisms is going to produce scandals aplenty in future, and potentially supply chaos too. Watch this space.

Etcetera

On power cuts

Professor James Woodhuysen wonders whether electricity companies know something we don’t about the possibility of power cuts.

Rediscovering reality

Chris Bayliss argues that Mr Miliband’s plans for the UK energy system are not going to survive contact with engineering reality.

Media appearances

Andrew was on Talk and GB News talking about the Government’s delay of the combustion engine ban.

Harry was on Talk on the same subject.
