Award-winning actress Emma Thompson recited a bizarre poem for news cameras Wednesday warning of an apocalyptic world of “liquefied slaughter” and melting ice caps all thanks to greedy fossil fuel companies.
Attending a protest against Shell’s plans to drill for oil in the Arctic, Thompson indulged Sky News reporters with a poem written all by her lonesome, lamenting the immense selfishness of those using oil to fuel their cars and heat their homes.
Thompson earnestly asks Shell, “what makes it so damnably hard to discern the danger, we’re in our descent into hell.” Thompson presses the point asking “do you think we should just boil baby boil.”
Delivered in front of giant polar bear, Thompson soldiered with strained enthusiasm through her nightmarish scenario of a grandfather explaining to his grandchild why the arctic wildlife and icebergs have disappeared.
“Dear, that’s what they asked us to do don’t you see, it was business not greed. We burned oil in our cars, in our lorries, our works, we all did it,” Thompson said.
Struggling to increase the hyperbole of her alarmist prose, Thompson went on to make a not so subtle equivalence between workers in the fossil fuel industry and Nazis. “It wasn’t my fault, I was just doing my job, I was following orders,” she said.
But the millionaire actress’s tirade against fossil fuel drew criticism from policy experts focusing on how countries can provide affordable energy to their citizens. Chris Warren from the Institute of Energy Research, told TheDCNF:
“Access to affordable and reliable energy from fossil fuels has helped lift people around the world out of poverty and will continue to do so. For wealthy celebrities like Thompson to advocate for depriving people of affordable energy is just plain greedy and selfish.”
The British actress joined dozens of protesters at the week-long protest outside Shell’s London headquarters. Thompson claimed the dangers of climate change were so serious that people need to “transition into a whole different way of living” and “get the fuck involved” to save the planet.
Commenting on Thompson’s extended rant, Director of the Global Warming Policy Foundation Benny Peiser told TheDCNF:
“Nobody is taking much notice anymore of this kind of habitual campaigning. Now that even President Obama has given the green light to ‘drill-baby-drill’ the Arctic, greens are becoming ever more shrill and isolated. And because fossil fuels are cheap and abundant for decades to come, no country is willing to give up extracting, selling and using as much as remains economical.”
Thompson is well-known for her left-wing credentials.
