Russia is funding demonstrations against shale gas in several European countries, MP  tells Bulgarian Parliament.

Russia has funded with 82 million euros the demonstrations against shale gas in several European countries, including Romania, and has blocked large infrastructure projects, such as Nabucco, Iulian Iancu, Chairman of the Committee on Industries and Services in the Chamber of Deputies, told a Thursday’s debate on energy issues.

He said that this can be best noticed now, given that Russia has threatened to reduce and even suspend its gas supplies to Europe.

‘Roughly, one third of the energy resources used by Europe come from Russia, but Russia ensures one third of its GDP from the receipts from the exports of energy, and so, therefore, Russia is interested in maintaining its European market. From here the despair to block large infrastructure projects, such as Nabucco, and to block Europeans’ access to indigenous resources, see the demonstrations against shale gas, which we regarded as environmental actions and which were, in fact, supported by Russia, and now we see why,’ said Iancu.

According to him, Russia funded last year, with 82 million euros, the demonstrations against shale gas in several European countries, including France and Romania.
